Parenting Your Way
Parenting is one of the most important roles you'll have in your life. You will learn more about
yourself in parenting your children than you will in a job, a relationship or a hobby. You'll find that
what works for your sister's or friend's family may not work for yours. Parenting is not black and
white and it will always challenge you. However, you won't find a more rewarding job anywhere else
on the planet!
Take Out Some Full Hours and Add in Some Empty Ones!
by Tami Gallagher

Studies by the University of Michigan document that since 1970 children have lost 12 hours of
free time per week, including a 25% drop in play and a 50% drop in unstructured outdoor
activities.  Meanwhile time in structured sports has doubled!

Child development experts report that children suffer from the lack of unstructured fun, that
unstructured play is essential to children’s growth, crucial in cultivating creativity and imagination,

Growing your Child's Brain Power
By Denise Konen

Do the new computer and television games for children mean smarter kids?  Not necessarily so,
even though all the commercials tell us we must buy ‘Baby Einstein’ and ‘Leap Frog,’ if we really

lacking in their ability to relate to others, to develop organizational and creative abilities, self-
awareness and the key emotional skills needed for healthy growth.

Air Travel with Babies
by Leslie Brown

I know from experience how grueling it can be to fly with an infant. I flew with my 6 month old
baby to visit my sister on a trip from Minneapolis to Salt Lake City and it was a long and
exhausting ordeal.
I decided to get flights with layovers to save some money and that was my first mistake. If at all
possible, spend the extra few bucks on non-stop flights. I’ve learned that saving sanity always
trumps saving money when it comes to travel. Another suggestion is to purchase your child a
seat so they can travel in the comfort of their own car seat. It is the safest way for them to
travel and believe me, it can be very difficult to make them comfortable on your lap when you
are stuck in your seatbelt. Be sure to check with your airline that you have an approved FAA
child safety seat. If you do travel with your child in your lap, ask at check-in if the flight is full. If
it isn’t, kindly inquire if there is a chance to have a vacant seat next to you.
